Rochester is a town situated in the county of Kent, England. It lies about thirty miles (48km) from London, and was one of Charles Dickens favourite places, who lived in the nearby Gads Hill Place, Higham.
Rochester, Gillingham and Chatham make up an area called Medway Towns, with a population of about two hundred and fifty thousand. The unitary authority was created back in nineteen ninety eight, and is independant of Kent County Council.
Rochester houses many important buildings including Rochester Cathedral, Rochester Castle, Eastgate House, the Corn Exchange and the Guildhall. Rochester Castle is situated on the East bank of the River Medway, and has a twelth century Keep, which is it's most important feature and is well preserved.
Rochester obtained city status back in the year twelve eleven, but due to an administrative mistake, it was lost and the town was absorbed by the Medway Unitary Authority. Medway applied several times for city status but was unsuccessful.
Rochest holds several festivals throughout the year, including two Dickens festivals one in the month of June and a Christmas one in December. Another famous festival is the Jack In The Green ceremony on May day, and the Medway Fuse Festival which normally takes place in Rochester.
