Scatsa airport is located on Shetland in Scotland. It is a commercial airport, and lies approximately twenty miles (31km) North of Lerwic. The airport was originally called RAF Scatsa back in nineteen forty, and was used as a Royal Air Force fighter plane base to assist coastal command flying boat operations.

Two runways were built in nineteen forty, and the first one was completed in nineteen forty one. During nineteen forty four the airport was used as a diversion point and support base for Lancaster planes from the famous 617 squadron (aka Dambusters).

After World War Two the airport was rarely used for a long time until nineteen seventy eight when it was converted back to a civillian airport to support the oil industry in Shetland and the Sullom Voe Oil terminal. These days more than two hundred thousand passengers pass through the airport each year.

Access by road:

The airport is off the B9076 road, which is accessible from the A968 from the North, or A970 at Brae from the South. Scatsta Airport hotel is the best option,if you want to stay close to Scatsta Airport, or do not want to take road transportation to a nearby hotel.
