The town of Northampton is located in the county of Northamptonshire, in England. It lies on the River Nene, approximately fifty miles (80km) South East of Birmingham city centre. The town used to be a major manufacturer for the shoe and leather industry, but only a few of the larger companies such as Crocket and Jones and Edward Green shoes still survive today. Many of the smaller factories were converted into blocks of flats for accomodation and business offices. Today, the major Industry for private sector employers is finance and distribution including Carlsburg Brewery, which opened back in nineteen seventy four by Princess Benedikte of Denmark.
Northampton can be easily accessed by road via the M1 motorway off junctions fifteen and sixteen.The train station in the town is Northampton Railway Station and West Coast Main Line and runs frequently to Birmingham, London and Crewe. The bus services in Northampton are run by First Northampton and Stagecoach Northants, which supply services to the surrounding towns and villages.
The musum in the town is Northampton Museun and Art Gallery, and shows details of the town's local history, as well as items of historical footwear, ceramics, glass and many more materials. The town has is home to University of Northampton, with a couple of campuses located within the town.
