Portsmouth is a city situated in the county of Hampshire, about nineteen miles (30.4km) South East of Southampton. The city is the second largest in the county, and has been a major naval port for hundreds of years. It also houses the oldest dry dock in the world, and is home to many famous ships including Lord Nelson's flagship, The Mary Rose and HMS Victory.

Portsmouth also has a ferryport for passenger and freight traffic to many destinations in Europe. The Spinnaker Tower is now a famous landmark of the city, and stands five hundred and sixty feet (170 metres) high, and is the main attraction to the redevelopment of the harbour. Portmouth City council own the tower, and the design was chosen by the city's residents.

Portsmouth is the only city island in the United Kingdom, because the majority of Portsmouth lies on Portsea island, where the Solent meets the English Channel. Portsmouth's city centre is the main area for shopping, including Crasswell Street, Arundel Street, Charlotte Street, Edinburgh Road and Commercial Road. Major retailers including Next, The Body shop, Wlikinson, Debenhams and many more have stores in this area. There are also major supermarkets including Sainsbury, Tesco and Iceland in the shopping area.

Stagecoach and First Hampshire and Dorset are the main bus operators in the city and the surrounding areas, including Fareham, Havant, Waterlooville and many more. There are three main road links to the city, these are the M275 motorway, the A2030 and the A3 major roads. There is a junction off the M27 motorway which links to the M275 to Portsmouth city centre.
