Preston is a city situated in the county of Lancashire, England. It was granted city status as recent as 2002, and has a population of about 134,00. During the nineteenth century, Preston grew from a small town to a much larger one because mainly of the cotton mill industry. By the early twentieth century the population increased to about one hundred and twenty thousand. But by the end of World War one the cotton industry collapsed and brought large unemployment in the area.
New Industries arrived such as Engineering and Electrical Goods manufacturing, and Preston was experiencing another boom, with more than three thousand council houses built between the nineteen twenties and thirties. The town centre experienced a big change during the nineteen sixties, with old buildings being demolished, and new shopping centres being built including the Fishergate Shopping Centre and St George's Shopping Centre.
The first motorway bypassed the town when it was built back in nineteen fifty eight, which formed part of the M6 in the next ten years. This gave preston a direct motorway link to Birmingham and Manchester, and by the end of the nineteen sixties Preston had a new bus station and a complete bypass around the town.
